Safety Tips: Basketball

Basketball is fun to play and great exercise. But it can be a contact sport, so injuries can happen. It also can be played year-round, indoors and out, so players can get repetitive stress injuries (overuse injuries). These happen when someone trains too much or makes the same motions over and over.

To stay safe when playing basketball, follow these tips.

What Basketball Safety Gear Do Players Need?

Sports safety equipment for basketball players’ faces includes a mouth guard to help prevent broken teeth and mouth and tongue injuries. Some leagues require mouth guards. Players need protective eyewear too, like safety or sport glasses made of plastic that won’t shatter.

Players should wear basketball sneakers that fit well and support them. Guys should wear an athletic supporter with a cup and girls should wear a supportive sports bra.

Avoid wearing jewelry, which could get pulled or caught. A jammed finger with a ring on it could be trouble.

How Can Basketball Players Stay Safe?

Before starting the season, players should get a sports physical. Their doctor can check for any health problems and talk about sports safety. Most schools won't let athletes play unless they've had a sports physical within the past year. Being in good shape can help players avoid injuries.

The coach should encourage safe and fair play, so players should learn the rules and follow them. It’s also important for the court to be in good condition. A wet court could lead to slips and falls. An outdoor court with an uneven surface or rocks could lead to a twisted ankle or other injury. So players should check that the court is in good shape.

Having a first-aid kit at all practices and games is key too.

Athletes should warm up and stretch before playing. If they feel pain or get hurt during practice or a game, they should stop what they're doing and get checked by an athletic trainer, coach, doctor, or nurse before getting back on the court.

When playing basketball outdoors, especially in hot weather, players should drink plenty of water or sports drinks to stay hydrated. They should take a break if they have any signs of heat illness.

To avoid overuse injuries, it can help for players to do other sports throughout the year that use different movements.
