At Dayton Children's Hospital, we know that juggling busy schedules with medical appointments can be overwhelming. That's why our pediatric surgery team offers a compassionate, streamlined solution for conditions like inguinal and umbilical hernias, undescended testicles and circumcisions.

Our same-day surgery program is designed with your family's convenience in mind. Imagine the relief of scheduling both a surgical consultation and the operation itself on the same day, allowing your child to receive essential care without disrupting your daily life.

We understand that what matters most is your child's comfort and your peace of mind. Our dedicated team is committed to making the experience as smooth and stress-free as possible, so you can focus on what truly matters - your child's health and well-being.

program benefits:

  • Minimized time away: By scheduling surgeries on a Friday, most children can recover over the weekend and be ready to return to school by Monday.
  • Reduced time spent in a health care setting: With most same-day surgery patients in and out of the hospital within three to four hours, including surgery time, your visit is quick and convenient.
  • Convenient location: Our south campus in Springboro offers easy-to-navigate surface parking, making your visit as hassle-free as possible.

Let us help you navigate this important time with ease and care, ensuring that your child's journey is as comfortable and seamless as possible.

how does the same-day surgery program work?

  1. Pre-consultation phone call: You will receive a call to determine if your child is a candidate for same-day surgery. Instructions on eating, drinking, medication and health history will be provided. It is important to follow these instructions, failure to do so may affect your child’s eligibility for surgery.
  2. Clinic consultation: Clinic consultations are typically scheduled between 8:30 and 9:30 am. During your child’s consultation, you will meet the surgeon and they will evaluate to determine if your child needs surgery. This should take about 30 minutes. If surgery is required, a patient care assistant will walk you and your child to the surgery center.
  3. Surgery: You and your child will wait in a pre-op room where your child will change into a surgical gown and their vitals will be taken. When it’s time, usually between 10:00 am and noon, your child will be taken to the operating room. Surgery is expected to last around 45 minutes to an hour.
  4. Post-surgery: Once home, your child should continue to rest and recover over the weekend with the goal of returning to school on Monday. Two weeks after your child’s surgery, a surgery clinic nurse will call to ensure recovery is going well and answer any questions you may have.
