how does the same-day surgery program work?
- Pre-consultation phone call: You will receive a call to determine if your child is a candidate for same-day surgery. Instructions on eating, drinking, medication and health history will be provided. It is important to follow these instructions, failure to do so may affect your child’s eligibility for surgery.
- Clinic consultation: Clinic consultations are typically scheduled between 8:30 and 9:30 am. During your child’s consultation, you will meet the surgeon and they will evaluate to determine if your child needs surgery. This should take about 30 minutes. If surgery is required, a patient care assistant will walk you and your child to the surgery center.
- Surgery: You and your child will wait in a pre-op room where your child will change into a surgical gown and their vitals will be taken. When it’s time, usually between 10:00 am and noon, your child will be taken to the operating room. Surgery is expected to last around 45 minutes to an hour.
- Post-surgery: Once home, your child should continue to rest and recover over the weekend with the goal of returning to school on Monday. Two weeks after your child’s surgery, a surgery clinic nurse will call to ensure recovery is going well and answer any questions you may have.
