Our volunteer resources team is dedicated to enhancing the quality of services at Dayton Children’s by assisting our staff, comforting patients and supporting their families. As a volunteer, you can make an impact in a variety of ways, such as wayfinding, helping in our activity rooms, assisting staff, and more. To volunteer you must first fill out an application. It may take up to 2 weeks to hear from our team and up to 8 weeks before you start if your application is accepted. All volunteers must be 18+ years old. 

  • Our requirements for our volunteers include:
  • Receive your flu vaccine by October 31 annually
  • Volunteer a minimum of 100 hours in a one-year period

Although limited at this time, opportunities may be available for corporate and group volunteers to assist at Dayton Children’s. Our group volunteers have helped with campus beautification projects, like simple landscaping, cleaning up trash, organization projects, cleaning toys, etc. Groups will not be involved with direct patient care or tasks in clinical areas. All volunteers must be 18+ years old.

As a pet therapy volunteer, you and your pet can make an impact in a variety of ways, including comforting patients and supporting their families. To volunteer you must fill out an application.   • Volunteer a minimum of 100 hours in a one-year period

summer volunteens

Our summer volunteen program gives high school students the chance to make a difference, learn new skills, and explore the rewards of volunteering in a hospital setting. Teens ages 16–18 can apply the first week of February each year for this 9-week summer experience. (Teen must be 16 years old by June 1 of the year they are applying.) Participants volunteer 3-4 hours a week, attend a required orientation in May, and must have parent or guardian approval to participate.

All volunteers must complete the application, interview, and onboarding process. We’re unable to accept last-minute requests to volunteer.

College students must submit their own application and contact us directly with questions. Applications cannot be submitted on behalf of someone else, even a parent or guardian.

Yes! Our job shadowing program allows junior and senior high school students and undergrad college students to shadow clinical or non-clinical staff for a 5 hour shift during one of our designated job shadowing dates. This does not include physicians and physician assistants. For more information on this program please contact our volunteer department at 937-641-3333 or by visiting here.

Yes. An annual flu vaccine is required and provided free of charge. You cannot volunteer if you are unable to complete this requirement annually.

To volunteer throughout the year, you must be 18 years old and graduated high school. For our summer volunteen program for high school students, you must be 16-18 years old. You must have turned 16 years old by June 1 of the year you applied.

Rocking babies in our NICU is our most requested volunteer position and not always available. We encourage interested volunteers to start in other areas of the hospital.

Applications for the summer volunteer program open February 1 each year for the week.

Please allow up to 2 weeks for a response after submitting your application.

Our volunteer resources team reviews each application and may invite you for an interview. If selected, you’ll complete onboarding appointments before starting. The full process, from application to your first day, can take up to 8 weeks.
