comprehensive care for children with critical health needs
Pediatric specialists at Dayton Children’s provide comprehensive care for children who are critically ill or injured, and for those with chronic illnesses who need a high level of medical care.
Critically ill or injured children are admitted to our pediatric intensive care unit, where our team cares for more than 1,600 children every year. Dayton Children’s is the only hospital in the region that is staffed by board-certified pediatric intensivists—doctors specially trained in critical care medicine. They work closely with Dayton Children’s pediatric doctors from more than 50 subspecialty areas, who can be contacted immediately for a phone consult or bedside care. No other hospital in our region offers this level of expertise for critically ill and injured children. Learn more
Children with a chronic illness who need a high level of medical care may be admitted to our transitional care unit. This six-bed unit cares for children who are dependent on technology, such as a ventilator, or require very close observation. Our highly trained physicians, nurses, rehabilitation specialists, child life specialists and social workers provide specialized care and support for these children and their families during and after a hospital stay.
