Dayton Children’s awarded prestigious Telly Awards

Marketing communications team recognized for documentary, trailer following separation of conjoined twins

Dayton Children’s was recognized by the 45th Annual Telly Awards for its documentary and trailer for “Connected: the seemingly impossible separation of Pedro and Augusto.” The hospital received a Silver Telly Award for the documentary trailer and a Bronze Telly Award for the full-length documentary.

The Telly Awards honors excellence in video and television across all screens and is judged by leaders from video platforms, television, streaming networks and production companies. This year’s winners include Adobe, Calvin Klein, ESPN, LinkedIn, Mother Jones, MTV Entertainment Studios, NASA, the LA Clippers (NBA). PlayStation Studios, Sawhorse Productions, TelevisaUnivison and more.

Dayton Children’s award-winning documentary, Connected, follows the seemingly impossible separation of conjoined twins, Pedro and Augusto. The nearly 5-year-old boys came to Dayton Children’s from Guatemala in July 2021 joined at the top of the head with a 90-degree turn, classified as craniopagus O’Connell class III. The condition is incredibly rare with an estimated 50 craniopagus twins born every year, with only an estimated 15 of those surviving more than a few months. The documentary chronicles the two years that surgeons and staff spent preparing and executing the series of separation surgeries for this rare and complex condition. The hospital released the documentary in July 2023 and the film has more than 900,000 views to date.

"When you hear incredible stories like this, they always seem to happen somewhere else. But not this time - this one is right here in Dayton,” said Todd Carter, video storyteller at Dayton Children’s. “I’m so proud of how our team cares for kids, and how we can partner to tell these remarkable stories.”

This was a record-breaking year for the Telly Awards with nearly 13,000 entries from across the globe and top video and television content producers. Winners were chosen by The Telly Awards Judging Council. Only 7-10% of the 12,000 plus entries win Silver Tellys and 18-25% of entries win are recognized with a Bronze Telly Award.
