National credentialing center honors Dayton Children’s nurse residency program
Dayton Children's nursing program receives recognition from the American Nursing Credentialing Center
The Dayton Children’s Hospital nursing residency program was recognized as a Practice
Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP) with Distinction by the American Nursing
Credentialing Center (ANCC). This honor acknowledges the hospital’s comprehensive
educational immersion offered to newly graduated registered nurses. Dayton Children’s is
the first and only health care system in the region to achieve this designation for a nurse
residency program.
The 12-month immersive program supports registered nurses transitioning toward
competent professionals in the clinical environment. Residents are presented with
opportunities to socialize, hone critical-thinking and evidence-based decision-making
skills, interact with peers and leaders, while learning about topics such as patient and
family experience, quality care and ethics.
The ANCC acknowledged Dayton Children’s pediatric experts’ ability to prepare nurse
residents as they begin their practice. The outstanding development of critical thinking,
communication and interprofessional teamwork was specifically mentioned by the
certification committee. They also recognized the collaboration of Dayton Children’s and
area nursing schools to help support nurse residents' continuing education.
At Dayton Children’s, approximately 88% of new nurses stay for the first year, 20% above
the average retention reported by Nursing Solutions, Inc. in 2022.
