Atopic dermatitis (AD), also referred to as eczema, is an inflammatory, allergic, non-contagious skin disorder. AD is the first step of the typical progression of allergic diseases called the "atopic march". This involves the diagnosis of AD, food allergy, allergic rhinitis and asthma — typically in that sequential order. Studies show up to 80 percent of children with eczema develop asthma and/or allergic rhinitis later in childhood. With the high prevalence of co-existing allergies, guidelines recommend testing for allergies in certain patients. Unmanaged AD can have a significant impact on quality of life for your child and family.

They also watch for additional allergic diseases associated with the "atopic march", as your child as she grows older. Studies show over 50 percent of children with AD report their condition has a severely negative effect on their quality of life.

Your child's individualized plan includes treatment options, such as emollients and prescription medications, and recommendations for personal care, household and lifestyle. While there isn't a cure for AD, your child's symptoms can be minimized and quality of life increased.
