enhancing the educational attainment of all children

Reaching beyond the walls of the hospital to improve health naturally includes partnering with schools. To improve the health status of children where they live, learn and play, relationships with schools are paramount to our success. Dayton Children’s partners with local schools in a variety of ways to improve both health and educational outcomes.

neighborhood school center – kiser prek-6

Dayton Children’s serves as the community partner to Kiser Pre-K-6 School as part of the Dayton Public School’s Neighborhood School Center program. This partnership demonstrates the continued commitment Dayton Children’s has to the Greater Old North Dayton neighborhood.

Neighborhood School Centers are Dayton Public Schools that are centered on their neighborhoods, serving as healthy places of learning for children and families. They seek to improve student performance, realign community resources to support youth achievement and improve quality of life in the neighborhood.

Focused on community leadership, Neighborhood School Centers bring together partners to offer a range of supports and opportunities to children, families, and communities.

These partners work to ensure that:

  • Children are ready to learn when they enter school and every day thereafter.
  • All students learn and achieve to high standards.
  • Young people are well prepared for adult roles in the work place, as parents and as citizens.
  • Families and neighborhoods are safe, supportive and engaged.
  • Parents and community members are involved with the school and their own life-long learning.
  • Achieving these results is the responsibility of all of the community partners, not just the schools and teachers.

With Kiser less than a mile away from Dayton Children’s main campus, the selection of Dayton Children’s as the school’s not-for-profit partner is an incredible opportunity to make a sustained difference in the lives of our neighborhood’s children.

A school site coordinator who is part of the Center for Community Health and Advocacy at Dayton Children’s supports the school principal in managing the contributions of community partners who bring programs to the school site and will serve as the broker of partnerships for the school. By strengthening relationships between these groups, Dayton Children’s hopes to enhance the educational attainment of children in the region, better share resources in the neighborhood and create a successful school in a healthy community.
