Are you looking to improve your overall wellness, but not sure where to start? While we are used to focusing on physical fitness (eating well, going for runs, lifting weights) for our wellness, the experts at On Our Sleeves want you to know that mental fitness is just as important!

That’s why during Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re on a campaign to focus on being mentally fit, what that means and how you can achieve it for yourself while also supporting the kids in your life.

We all know that physical fitness is important for our bodies, but did you know that mental fitness is just as crucial for our minds? When we are mentally fit, we may experience more positive relationships, a sense of purpose, and the tools to help during hard times.

Now, being mentally fit doesn't mean that we won't have struggles. But it will help us be more resilient when tough times come our way.  Just like physical fitness, it's something that takes practice, effort, and energy.

There are four main categories to focus on when improving your mental fitness:

  • nutrition
  • sleep
  • movement
  • emotional empowerment

Read about how each category impacts overall health and wellness, then click the button to dive deeper and discover more! Remember, mental fitness is fitness and with practice, effort, and energy, you can achieve a healthier, happier mind!

Nutrition

Nutrition is not just important for our physical health, but also our mood and mental well-being. Eating foods that nourish our bodies and brains can improve our overall mental fitness.

Sleep

Sleep is also vital for our mental health. Getting enough sleep can help reduce irritability, anger, mood swings, impulsivity, and lack of motivation.

Movement

Movement is another important factor in mental wellness. Exercise releases endorphins, which help us relieve stress and allow us to take a break and have fun. But you don’t have to set up for an intense 45-minute workout every day! Movement just means finding time to put your body into action whether it’s walking around your neighborhood or raising your arms above your head. Whatever you can do, is good for your wellness!

Emotional empowerment

Emotional empowerment is different from the other categories because this work all happens in your head! Emotional empowerment is all about identifying and expressing our feelings and recognizing the feelings of others. Being able to regulate our emotions is key to mental wellness, and it starts with understanding and identifying our emotions.
