The lipid clinic at Dayton Children's Hospital provides comprehensive evaluation, education and treatment options for children with lipid disorders.

Lipid disorders include things like high cholesterol and high triglycerides. Lipid disorders are frequently associated with insulin resistance syndrome and complications of obesity and elevated BMI. 

what happens during a lipid clinic visit?

At your visit, the physician will do a complete physical exam. They will also review labs that were ordered before your visit, and review the diet history. The lipid clinic team will then provide assessment, discuss and order further testing as needed, and start a treatment plan.

Testing helps us learn more about your child so we can design the best treatment plan for them. Some tests that may be ordered after the evaluation are:

• Cardiac testing - echocardiogram and EKG to measure heart function

• Standard blood work

what does treatment look like?

Your child will receive a treatment plan based on their specific needs. The plans commonly include diet and exercise pieces as well as a medical treatment plan that includes bloodwork and medical testing individualized for your child. Other treatments like medication are discussed based on your child's needs.

what other services are offered in the lipid clinic?

• Medical nutrition therapies: ​When visiting the lipid clinic at Dayton Children's, your child will meet with a dietician for a full dietary evaluation. This will happen at your initial visit and then again as needed. The dietitian will set individual goals with your child and your family, and work on a nutrition plan specifically for your child. 
• Exercise recommendation: Your child will be evaluated by the physician on their physical needs and abilities. They will help set fitness goals as needed. Our team will also do testing to make sure all activities are safe and appropriate for each child.
• Lifestyle changes: The lipid team will complete a review of healthy lifestyle changes for the entire family. They will also complete goal setting specific to your child. Once completed we will provide resources and educational materials to your family to assist in meeting these goals.
