Heather Dyer, MD, Division Chief

bio

Heather Dyer, MD, has over 15 years of experience caring for pediatric inpatients and serves as chief, division of hospitalist medicine at Dayton Children's. This team of pediatricians, known as “hospitalists,” specializes in caring for children and teens while they are admitted to the hospital. For most patients admitted to the general pediatric units, pediatric hospitalists serve as the lead physician coordinating the overall plan of care and collaborating with nurses and teams of specialists inside the hospital, as well as the child's pediatrician outside the hospital, to ensure the best treatment and outcomes.

Because patients don't just get sick on weekdays from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Dr. Dyer is available to patients 24/7/365.  She investigates and treats a broad range of acute and chronic illnesses of childhood and works to coordinate their safe discharge back to outpatient follow-up. She treats conditions affecting the full range of different body systems but will sometimes consult subspecialty services (such as gastroenterology, neurology, etc.) when needed. For our more medically-complex patients (who may follow with multiple subspecialty services), she often serves as 'quarterback' coordinating the different teams’ care for the patient.

get to know me

I chose my specialty because...

I believe taking care of children is one of the most important and fulfilling jobs in the world. As a mother, I know how desperately parents want their children to be safe, healthy, and happy. I love helping families get back to their regularly scheduled lives outside the hospital.

I chose to work at Dayton Children's because...

working here provides a great opportunity for me to make a difference helping sick children get better.

Dayton Children's is special because...

unlike most hospital systems that provide care for all ages, we are completely focused on children here. We understand and recognize that the physical and emotional needs of children are truly different than adults (not just smaller!) And we are committed to going above and beyond to meet those needs and allow kids and their families lead healthy happy lives.
