Seizures happen when the electrical activity in the brain misfires. Sometimes, people have episodes that may look like a seizure, but are not caused by electrical activity misfiring. These are called psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES). These seizures are often caused by stress and trauma in a patient’s life. It is important to remember that children who have been diagnosed with PNES are unable to control when these events happen and that they are not aware of what they are doing.
The PNES clinic was developed so that children who have received this diagnosis will have access to the comprehensive care they need. An important part of PNES is working with psychology to determine what might be causing these events. Neurology and psychology will work together to help you and your child better understand the diagnosis and to develop a plan of care that is best for your child.
what will my child’s first appointment look like?
You will meet with a neurology nurse practitioner and a psychologist together to discuss your child’s seizures and their journey to date. Together we will discuss possible stressors/triggers and give some tips in managing this. We will collaborate with your child’s school, work and/or outside mental health professionals to assure the best possible outcome for your child.
how often will I have follow-up appointments?
The initial appointment will take about one hour and a follow-up visit in clinic will be made depending on specific needs.
