pediatric mental health

what is pediatric mental health?

We address children’s mental health early and collaboratively, recognizing that unmet needs have lifelong impacts across school, home, and personal life.

Pediatric mental health is the emotional, psychological and social wellbeing of children and adolescents. It’s about how our children think, feel and behave – and how they handle stress, relate to others and make choices. It’s about helping kids thrive – feeling good about themselves forming healthy relationships and coping with life’s ups and downs.

Many kids face mental health challenges, such as anxiety, depression or behavioral issues. With early support and the right care, they can learn to manage symptoms and lead fulfilling lives. By partnering with the community and area organizations, Dayton Children’s is making sure children get the support they need to address the mental health needs of children and their families – from prevention and diagnosis to outpatient therapy and inpatient treatment.

when to see a mental health specialist

Many children and teens will experience anxiety or fear and may even show challenging behaviors at times. If your child is having more severe or constant symptoms that are interfering with school, home or social activities then it may be time to speak with your child’s primary care provider. If your child’s provider is concerned about symptoms or behaviors, they can refer you to Dayton Children’s for pediatric mental health care.

crisis care

The goal of Dayton Children’s mental health crisis services are to help stabilize a patient in a crisis in a safe, comfortable and supportive environment. We do that through our mental health crisis center, mental health inpatient unit, intensive outpatient therapy and more.

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or life-threatening situation, please call 9-1-1 or go to an emergency department.

The Price Family Mental Health Crisis Center, located in the Mathile Center for Mental Health and Wellness, is designed to evaluate children in a safe, caring and effective way that are experiencing a mental health crisis. Our trained mental health clinicians will provide an assessment and connect children to the appropriate services, which may be inpatient, day treatment or outpatient services.

The healing process begins on the unit through a combination of traditional talk therapy, art, music and movement therapy as well as interactive media boards. Bridge therapy aims to reduce return emergency crisis visits and to reduce acute psychiatric admissions. Patients and families will receive limited interventions that will focus on crisis management and securing on-going mental health services.

The bridge clinic team will provide crisis interventions, help identify what led to the crisis event, help with developing healthy coping skills, and educate use of the crisis management plan to manage current and future crises.

Patients will be seen in the bridge clinic if they have been seen in our Price Family Crisis Center, the mental health inpatient unit or our psychiatry clinic.

Sometimes when a child is ready to leave the behavioral health inpatient unit, they aren’’t quite ready to adjust back to normal life. That’s where day treatment programs can help smooth the way. Two levels of care in the day treatment program can help your child transition back to living at home, going to school and interacting with the world.

Partial hospitalization program

  • The goal of this program is to prevent or safely step your child down from inpatient hospitalization, and improve overall functioning through stabilization. Your child comes to the program instead of school for a few weeks (timing depends on their age). We integrate psychoeducation and therapy with their school work. This allows for intensive help with avoiding self-harm, increasing recovery and coping skills, and transitioning back to their everyday life.

Intensive outpatient program

  • For teens who can function at school but still need a more intensive focus on recovery, Dayton Children’s offers the intensive outpatient program. For three hours, three days a week, teens attend group therapy to provide recovery skills for the areas that they may still be struggling with.

If you think your child may benefit from one of our day treatment programs, talk with your child’s pediatrician. They can determine what kind of help your child needs and can make a referral to our program if appropriate.
