For adolescents, summertime signifies the end of the school year and the beginning of relaxed schedules. The need to wake up at a regularly scheduled time no longer exists and oftentimes they can stay awake later than they would during the school year. So, how do you get them back into the routine when the school year rolls back around?
3 reasons why routines are so important for kids
1. Routines can help children feel safe
When children know what to expect from a situation, they are more able to cope with it. This sense of predictability can decrease anxiety and help children cope with challenging situations.
2. Routines can help children build independence
When children get used to repeating the same set of steps, they are more able to do these steps on their own. If your children know the expectation is to complete their homework as soon as they get home each day, eventually they will not need reminding and will complete the task on their own. Using routines in this way can help children develop a sense of control—and make your day go more smoothly.
3. Routines can decrease power struggles
When children have consistent and predictable routines, they are more likely to do what is expected of them. The need to tell your children repeatedly what is expected of them is reduced and the routine becomes a part of everyday life. This reduces stress and improves everyone’s mental health.
How to bring routines back into your schedule for the school year
Start your school routine a week early – Changes in routine do not happen overnight so gradually ease your children back a week or so before their first day. Sticking to a sleep routine helps reduce anxiety and improves mood.
Be prepared for the next day – Avoid the morning rush by packing lunches, planning outfits and by setting packed school bags by the door. This is a great stress reduction tip for you and the kids.
Do homework right away – I know families are busy, especially when the kids are involved in sports. Create a habit of completing homework as soon as they walk in the door so they will not have to worry about it later.
