questions
New patients — including those seen first in the ER or urgent care — can schedule directly online. No referral required in most cases.
Pediatric orthopedists complete additional fellowship training focused on growing bones, muscles and joints — including growth plates, which adults don’t have. Our team also knows how to make exams, casting and recovery less stressful for kids and teens.
At Dayton Children’s, we have great clinic access for sports injuries and fractures when your child needs it most. For urgent conditions, find care now at a Dayton Children’s urgent care or emergency department. For non-urgent concerns, you can schedule online with orthopedics and choose the earliest available appointment.
Not necessarily. We pursue the least invasive treatment plan possible — many injuries heal with casting, bracing or physical therapy — and recommend surgery only when it truly helps. If surgery is the right choice, our team will walk you through exactly what to expect before, during and after.

Madi’s story
In March 2025, Madi was competing in a postseason wrestling tournament when she tore her ACL (a ligament in the knee that helps stabilize the knee during cutting and pivoting movements). She forfeited the rest of the matches for the day and went to Dayton Children’s for an X-ray and a referral to orthopedics. As a patient in Dayton Children’s Center for the Female Athlete, Madi was able to get in for a quicker appointment and get the treatment she needed.
“We felt so lucky we made that decision to come to the Center for the Female Athlete,” Sarah shared. “It really expedited getting Madi a diagnosis and where she needed to be for care. Madi ended up needing surgery, and knowing and trusting the Dayton Children’s team already made us feel more comfortable going into that.”
If your child is facing an orthopedic injury or condition, Dayton Children’s provides expert care that goes beyond the diagnosis. Our team looks at the whole picture including nutrition, mental health, and physical recovery to build a plan around your child’s unique needs.
