A to Z: Sprain

A sprain is the stretch or partial tear of ligaments (which connect two bones).

More to Know

Sprains are common injuries, especially among active older kids and teens who play sports.

Sprains usually are caused by injuries that involve turning, twisting, or stopping suddenly, such as twisting an ankle. A bad sprain may take a month to heal, sometimes longer.

Keep in Mind

Sprains usually heal well, but they need time to fully get better. The injured area needs to rest, so it’s important to not return to sports or physical activities until the sprain is healed.
