buying your teen’s first car: safety tips for car shopping

It may feel like just last year you were picking out your child’s car seat and now you are in the market for a new car! Just like car seats, it is important to think about their safety along with your budget. We know your teen may have a dream car in mind, but it’s important to keep safety in mind!

The Safe Ride Checklist will help you and your teen find a car that they’ll love and you’ll feel good about. Print it out and take it with you while shopping to make sure the car you choose is safe and meets both of your needs!

tips for a positive and safe shopping experience:

start with a smart plan

Before heading to the dealership, sit down with your teen to do some research. They may already have their heart set on a particular model or style, but it’s important to understand the basics. Start by setting a realistic budget, then have your teen look up different car types, safety features, and the pros and cons of each, so they know what to look for when you hit the lot!

to buy new or certified pre-owned?

Used cars are often more affordable, but if your budget allows, consider buying a new or certified pre-owned (CPO) car. CPO vehicles are a great choice since they often come with extended warranties and have been inspected for quality. If you’re leaning toward a used car, make sure you know the car’s maintenance history. If you have a trusted mechanic, take them along to make sure the car is in good shape and has all the important safety features.

keep it simple with power and efficiency

Avoid high horsepower vehicles. Teen drivers don’t need extra speed. Look for a car that’s gas-efficient and easy to handle.

test drives are a must

Before you buy it, always take the car for a test drive. Make sure it feels right for both you and your teen.

get comfortable with the car

Once you’ve signed the papers and bought the new car, get familiar with it alongside your teen. Read through the owner’s manual, locate key features like lights, windshield wipers, and the gas tank.

Finally, before hitting the road, always wear seatbelts, avoid distractions, and keep your insurance and registration handy. With the right prep, your teen will be ready to drive safely. Happy car shopping!

what to look for while car shopping:

Use our downloadable Safe Ride Checklist to inspect the car inside and out. Make sure you focus on:

  • Exterior: Check the paint, windows, tires, and headlights to make sure it’s all up to code and working well
  • Interior: Make sure the seats, seatbelts, dashboard lights, steering wheel, and tech all work. Push buttons and turn things on and off to make sure everything is in order!
