A to Z: Open Wound, Ear

May also be called: Cut

An open wound of the ear means a cut or break in the skin. The wound may be minor and near the surface of the skin. Or the wound may be more serious, affecting deeper tissues of the ear, like cartilage, nerves, or vessels.

Details

Seek immediate medical attention if bleeding will not stop, a wound is more than an inch long, or appears to be deep or gaping. Doctors may need to close the wound with stitches, tape, or an adhesive glue.

Key Point

Treat minor wounds at home with first aid. Deep, large, and dirty wounds need more care. (A “dirty” wound is one that germs have gotten into.) After a wound is treated and bandaged, follow instructions carefully to prevent infection and minimize scarring.
