common
questions

Many families come to us with a referral from their pediatrician, especially after a first seizure or ongoing headaches. You can also call or schedule online to get started, and our team will help coordinate the records and test results we need.

Pediatric neurologists specialize in the developing brain and nervous system — conditions in infants, children and teens often look and behave differently than they do in adults. Our team is also trained to make exams and testing like EEGs less stressful for kids.

It depends on your child’s symptoms. We offer advanced testing on-site, including EEG, EMG, evoked potentials and nerve conduction studies, and your child’s neurologist will explain exactly which tests can help and what to expect during each one.

Not necessarily. Many children have a single seizure — including febrile seizures that happen with a fever — and never have another. A pediatric neurologist can evaluate what happened, run testing like an EEG if needed, and give your family clear answers and a plan.

Violet smiles for the camera

Violet’s story

When 11-week-old Violet began having unusual movements, her parents brought her to Dayton Children’s, where testing confirmed seizures — and a diagnosis of Aicardi syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. Her neurologist had cared for two other children with the same condition.

“With the support from Dayton Children’s and our family, we quickly turned our grief into focus and started to identify what was within our control and putting everything in place to set Violet up for success,” her mom Elizabeth says.

With medication managing her seizures, Violet continues to make progress through outpatient therapy with a team spanning neurology, developmental pediatrics, rehabilitation and ophthalmology.

Violet’s journey has brought challenges, but each milestone is a testament to her resilience and the unwavering efforts of her care team. When a diagnosis is rare or complex, Dayton Children’s surrounds your child with the right specialists.
