The Comprehensive Care Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders provides extensive services to children through 21 years of age with blood disorders or malignancies. For children with a malignancy, state-of-the-art care is provided through collaboration with the Children's Oncology Group. A multidisciplinary approach ensures that patients' and families' medical and psychosocial needs are met.
The multidisciplinary care team for Dayton Children's Cancer Program follow nationally approved protocols for cancer treatment. This ensures the infants, children and teens treated at Dayton Children's receive the latest cancer treatments. All children are treated regardless of ability to pay.
Dayton Children's cancer program received a full-three year approval from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer after a successful survey in November 2006. This makes Children's one of just 17 approved pediatric programs in the country.

Services available
- Hematology/oncology services are provided to children with malignancies and blood disorders by our team of board-certified pediatric hematologists/oncologists. The children receive their care primarily in the inpatient unit, outpatient clinic or the Almost Home (short-stay/observation) unit. Nurses with additional training and expertise in pediatric oncology nursing staff these units. In the outpatient clinic, children are seen for follow-up exams, medication administration and transfusions in a patient-focused environment. Procedures requiring conscious sedation and after-hours care are provided by Almost Home. The inpatient unit provides special care for the seriously ill patient and those patients receiving prolonged administrations of chemotherapy. All rooms in the inpatient unit are HEPA-filtered to provide a safe environment for children. The hematology/oncology department works closely with Children's Home Care of Dayton (CHCOD) and general practitioners to meet the special needs of these children. Director: Emmett Broxson, Jr, MD
- West Central Ohio Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center uses a multidisciplinary approach to care for sickle cell patient including infants with hemoglobinopathies identified by the state newborn screening program. The team consists of a physician, social worker, nutritionist, geneticist, nurse coordinator and outreach coordinator. The patients with hemoglobinopathies will receive counseling and education. - West Center Ohio Hemophilia Treatment Center. Since 1975, the West Central Ohio Hemophilia Center has operated as a tertiary care facility using "comprehensive care" and "case management" models to provide centralized, multidisciplinary, comprehensive care and services for persons with hemophilia and other inherited bleeding/clotting disorders. The department now offers a thrombophilia program. Director: James French, II, MD
- Neuro-oncology program provides care for children with brain tumors. The child is seen by a multidisciplinary team with a neurosurgeon, endocrinologist, oncologist, social worker, neuropsychologist, physical therapist, nurse coordinator and oncologist. Director: Emmett Broxson, Jr, MD
- Long-term follow-up clinic provides evaluations and supportive care for patients who have received therapy and are considered cured of their disease. National guidelines established by the Children's Oncology group are used to provide surveillance for long-term effects of therapy. The team consists of a nurse coordinator, endocrinologist, social worker, dietician, geneticist and oncologist. Additional referrals are made as needed to other pediatric specialists. - Stem cell transplant program provides monthly pretransplant evaluation and follow-up for children who have received a stem cell transplant at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center or Nationwide Children's Hospital.
