Welcome to the Dayton Children's Pediatric Residency Journal Club web page!
The purpose of this web page is to outline a set of guidelines for future Journal Club presentations as well as provide EBM resources for our residents. Within the next month, we will begin to post a list of critically appraised topics (CATs) based on upcoming Journal Club presentations. All residents will have complete access to recently appraised articles.
The goals of Journal Club are for residents to develop the skills to:
- Formulate a clinical question using PICO
- Be able to search and find the best evidence/article to answer that question
- Critically appraise that evidence/article
- Decide whether that evidence/article will influence or change clinical practice
Use the following links to help you prepare:
- Duke: Evidence Based Toolkit - This site provides helpful explanations on how to evaluate articles and also how to calculate likelihood ratios, RR, AR, RRR, NNT, and OR's.
- Wright State University Library - Provides access to search databases as well as additional EBM resources, including the online version of Users' Guides to the Medical Literature.
Other great resources available at the CMC library:
- Users' Guides to the Medical Literature, JAMA
- Evidence-Based Medicine: How to Practice and Teach EBM - Sackett DL et al
Once you are ready to evaluate your article, choose one of the worksheets below to help guide your appraisal. This worksheet should be used in conjunction with the Journal Club Worksheet which provides a step-by-step approach to appraising your article as well as guidelines for your Journal Club Presentation.
